Sustainability in our Company

With consideration, care and foresight for our environment and our employees

Our company’s core product is corrugating base paper for the production of packaging materials. Therefore sustainability is the foundation of our business model - we recycle wastepaper in a manner that is kind to the environment. This method of production, and the economic target of using as little energy as possible during the process are the drive for our technical progress. Together with our advanced thinking and innovative actions this guarantees our business success.

Our forward-looking actions includes

  • collaborating with our business partners on an equal footing and involving them in our processes at a high level,
  • constantly monitoring our key ratios and performing regular external and internal audits and reviews,
  • continuously improving our processes and monitoring the effects of this process,
  • utilising the experience gained in 100 years of paper-making in order to remain successful in the future.


We maintain sustainability in two areas in particular:

  • environment (wastepaper, water, energy)
  • human (social commitment, employee development, training, safety).

Environment

Old turns into new. This is what the rhythm of nature teaches us.

Sustainable use of renewable raw materials is the greatest challenge for industry in the 21st century. Sparing use of resources is part of our production process as a matter of course: We are reducing the amount of water and energy used by continuously improving our production processes.

We use recycled paper from printing companies, private households and commercial packaging to make high-quality corrugating base paper. In addition, we foster the sustainable use of wastepaper in our own internal recycling cycle.

Paper as a raw material is a perfect choice for sustainable use, because unlike plastic for example it is not made from finite resources. Thanks to our sustainable resource management, the production of paper is and will remain highly environmentally friendly.
Since 2011 we have been meeting the stringent quality requirements for certification according to the FSC standard. We thus guarantee our contribution towards responsible and sustainable forest management. Technical adaptations for environmental protection and energy efficiency are permanently being made in accordance with the latest standard, based on the EU Reference Document on Best Available Technique 8. This system also includes the environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 or EMAS.

Water is one of our most important resources, therefore the sustainable use of water is mandatory for us. We aim to use as little fresh water as possible and to keep as much water in the production cycle as possible. In our own wastewater treatment plants, biogas that is used as a source of energy is produced using anaerobic technology.

Closed water loops, optimised water consumption and sustainable wastewater treatment are as matter of course for us in our commitment to ecological restoration.


The Frohnleiten Hydroelectric Power Plant with a capacity of 10 MW.

In the past years we have concentrated on reducing our energy consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases through specific innovations. This includes the reduction or more efficient use of energy and sources of energy. We reduce the use of traditional sources of energy such as coal and gas by using:

  • renewable sources of energy
  • biomass
  • waste incineration
  • hydroelectricity
  • optimal energy management.

With our certified energy management system we are always focussed on our energy input. In future we will endeavour to use efficient systems that will allow us to make plans that are less dependent on the energy market. Even now our energy supply is already largely independent and highly effective through own power generation with combined heat and power.


The Hamburger Rieger GmbH operates a substitute fuel heating plant at the industrial site in Schwarze Pumpe. The independence from the energy market and additional synergy effects secure the location on a long-term basis. (www.spreerecycling.com)

Human

We help to ensure that it feels good to live in our homeland.

Environmental protection, economic success and social responsibility go hand in hand at Hamburger Containerboard. Therefore we have invested highly in environmental and safety measures as well as further education and training in recent years.

For us, social responsibility means improving the quality of our products and thus preserving jobs in the various regions where our sites are located. We support the regional economy by awarding contracts to local businesses.

We live in an active togetherness with the local population: By supporting local clubs, sports organisations and social institutions such as kindergartens, we actively participate in shaping the social life of our neighbours.

We value a collegial and innovative atmosphere at work and support employees with an entrepreneurial attitude. Training, further education programs and performance incentives strengthen the team spirit and improve motivation.

With profound training and further education, our employees take responsibility for meeting our targets every day. Thus we are all working together for our success. We actively foster our employees’ commitment and creativity, for example with an operational suggestion scheme.

Hamburger Containerboard needs qualified and motivated employees. Therefore it is important that we train competent employees in all areas of the business ourselves. We regularly present our training opportunities in technical and commercial areas at apprentice fairs.

For us, training means taking on a great responsibility and obligation: We impart all the relevant training contents as well as business-specific know-how. Comprehensive training and numerous further education options are the foundation for the successes we achieve together with our employees.

We care about our employees’ occupational health and safety as a top priority. For this purpose, we employ qualified safety engineers and additional occupational safety officers. Since the launch of our occupational safety software “sam”, it is possible to get information about the training status of all issues of safety quickly, and to impart this knowledge effectively. Thus, all aspects of occupational safety can be updated quickly and sustainably for all employees.
